A
widespread
and
serious
health
problem
in
our
community
is
obesity,
which
is
directly
related
to
the
later
development
of
severe
health
conditions
such
as
diabetes
and
heart
disease.
Obesity
largely
arises
once
our
beneficiaries
abandon
their
healthy
traditional
food
habits
for
convenient
junk
foods.
Traditional
Iranian
food
is
a
variation
of
the
Mediterranean
diet
and
includes
fruits,
vegetables,
fish,
whole
grains
and
limited
unhealthy
fats.
Several
studies
suggests
that
this
diet
helps
promote
good
health
and prevents disease.
ICOH
organises
an
awareness
project
which
aims
to
alleviate
these
problems
by
enhancing
skills
and
confidence
about
a
healthy
diet
by
drawing
on
Iranian
heritage,
healthy
eating
and
cooking.
Participants
from
the
community
will
take
part
in
ten
workshops.
In
each
workshop
a
four-member
group
will
use
one
of
their
own
home
recipes
while
being
guided
by
two
trainers
who
specialise
in hygiene and nutrition. These specialists will monitor group activities and provide extra information. The workshops aim to:
(1) improve knowledge, skills and confidence about traditional healthy eating and cooking;
(2) improve knowledge about food hygiene and safety and wise shopping;
(3) socialising and meeting new people.
At
the
end
of
the
workshops
all
participants
will
work
together
to
prepare
food
for
100
people.
The
cooked
foods
will
be
packed
and
distributed
among
people
from
British
society
and
other
communities.
Information
about
the
nutritional
benefits
of
the
Iranian
foods
in
promoting
a
longer
and
healthier
life
will
be
included
in
the
packs
with
the
recipe
posted
on
the
community
website. This activity aims to:
(1) raise the awareness of the wider community about traditional healthy Iranian foods;
(2) share Iranian heritage with British society;
(3) enhance teamwork and increase group effectiveness;
(4) provide individuals with a healthy meal.
